Justin Fashanu was a soccer superstar, the first black million pound player. He was also the first openly gay footballer in the UK, who hanged himself at the age of 37.
Almost 20 years after his suicide, a new documentary ‘Forbidden Games’ tells Justin Fashanu’s tragic story.
This film has been two years in the making and has been one of the most challenging stories to tell. Justin was an incredibly complex character. His abandonment as a child had a profound effect on him and he was constantly chasing love, acceptance and validation. His search for an identity led him down increasingly dangerous paths and ultimately to his demise. This film will test your humanity. To some he was an icon, a pioneer, a trailblazer. To others a manipulator and an alleged criminal. With Justin the lines were very blurred. I’ll be intrigued to see the reaction of the viewing public. — Adam Darke
